BALANGA City, Bataan, March 21 (PNA) -- The city government has launched the free use of laptop computers with internet access in line with its vision of a world-class University Town.

The free use of laptop computers with internet access have been set up over the weekend in three tents at the Plaza Mayor de Balanga fronting the Balanga City Hall.

City administrator Rudy de Mesa said that 12 laptops were for initial use from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays not only by students but every one who wants to avail of the free internet service.

“Ito’y isang paraan upang ang mga mamamayan ay magkaroon ng access sa modern technology na hindi lamang para sa mayayaman kundi sa lahat ng mga taong pumapasyal sa Plaza Mayor de Balanga (This is one way of providing the citizenry and access to modern technology, not only for the residents here, but also to those people who are visiting at the Plaza Mayor de Balanga),” de Mesa said.

He said that more units would be available depending on the demand. But, he said, each user would be allotted only 15 to 20 minutes to accommodate many others.

Users can even log on in three networking sites – Facebook, Friendster and Twitter.

Balanga City Mayor Joet Garcia encouraged students to send in suggestions and their insights on programs of the city government through the Facebook.

Observers said that even the elderly were interested in the operation of the computers or in accompanying their eager grandchildren make use of the free internet service.

The University Town envisioned by Garcia is a community known for providing access to high quality education with complete educational facilities and amenities, supportive and conducive to learning and provides enhanced academic experience.

The proposed University Town encompasses an area of 80.4 hectares that will provide strong academic atmosphere to ensure sustainable development for the city, Garcia said. (PNA)
